Bargain hunting at the Linens 'n Things closeout

exterior shot of Linens n Things

It wasn't exactly mobbed when we were there on Wednesday.

When we heard that the two local Linens 'n Things are closing, and the merchandise being liquidated, we thought it might be bargain time. So we stopped by the soon-to-be closed store at the Northway Mall in Colonie (you know, at Central and Wolf) to see what kind of cheap housewares we could score.

The truth is that the sales were kind of underwhelming. The store's touting reductions of 10-25% -- and while that's true -- most of the reductions were of the 10% variety. Here's a list of item categories and how much they were marked down when we were there Wednesday afternoon:

Kitchen Aid mixersbedding - 10%

duvets - 25%

blankets - 20%

area rugs - 20%

areobeds - 10%

window treatments - 25%

throw pillows - 10%

kitchen appliances - 10%

cookware and kitchen tools - 10%

picture frames - 10%

dishes and silverware - 10%

We did find one or two thing that might be a deal. There were a bunch of nice blankets marked down 20%. The 10% markdowns on kitchen appliances includes Kitchen Aid mixers -- so depending on which model you buy, the discount could save you $30 or $40. And if you've always dreamed of scoring a discounted duvet, your time has come.

The Bottom Line

We're guessing the big cuts are still to come. The store had plenty of inventory when were there. And signs at the store say it will be closed on Friday for inventory and then will re-open on Saturday. Maybe there will be deeper discounts then.

Can you use your 20 percent off coupon (you know, those ones that come in the mail Every. Other. Day?) during the liquidation?

Does Linens 'n Things send those? Or is that Bed Bath and Beyond? And what is it they sell in "the Beyond" anyway?

Yes, LNT sends them on the back of their ads, or via email. BBB sends those postcards (or on the ads). A little secret, you can use BBB coupons at LNT ANNNDDD BBB will accept their own coupons, even after they have expired. A cashier there once told me, it's rare they get a customer who *doesn't* use a coupon. It's the way to shop at that store!

No, you can't use the coupons during the liquidation. I was there on Sunday and they have signs on the doors warning customers that the coupons will not be accepted.

Let's stop romanticizing farming - it's not fun, it's not all bucolic pastures and adorable baby animals, and it's not a great way to make a living. It's dirty, filthy, back-breaking 24/7/365 work that is done for the LOVE of animals, family, and the land. Let's start to RESPECT farmers and do what we can to see that they are actually able to earn a living.
