Philadelphia Orchestra at SPAC 2009

yo yo ma

Yo, Yo-Yo.

This summer's Philadelphia Orchestra run at SPAC starts Wednesday. It looks like there are some good performances lined-up -- even a few things that might appeal to those who are not normally orchestra fans.

Here are a handful of dates that caught our eye:

Aug 5: Lincoln Portrait
Alec Baldwin will be narrating an Aaron Copland orchestral piece about Lincoln.

Aug 8 7: Magical Movie Music

Including selections from Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Best of Bond, Suite from Disney's New Classics, "Colonel Bogey" March, The Patriot, Casablanca Suite, and The Big Movie Suite. Also: free ice cream from Stewart's.

Aug 12: A Cello Extravaganza with Yo-Yo
As in Ma.

Aug 13: Orchestra Masterpieces
Beethoven, Mozart, Shostakovich. And it's buy 3, get 1 free "date" night.

Aug 14: Broadway Rocks
Famed pops conductor Erich Kunzel and selections from West Side Story, Ain't Misbehavin', Grease, Movin' Out, Dirty Dancing, Footloose, The Wiz, Wicked, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Fame, Jersey Boys, Hairspray and (don't tell Mary) High School Musical 1 and 2.

Aug 20: Great American Composers
Marvin Hamlisch conducting selections from Berlin, Porter, Gershwin, Joplin.

Aug 21: Tchaikovsky Spectacular
Moody Russian classics. And free ice cream.

Assuming the Tchaikovsky night will feature the 1812 Overture, that's the one I try not to miss. $5 for the lawn, real live cannons fired during the song, and excellent fireworks to cap it off.

I have seen Yo-Yo Ma with John Williams at Tanglewood. I recommend going to see his performance because he is amazing. You won't be sorry.

@Justin: ...unless James Earl Jones is around :) I remember the performance you are talking about, great job by Yo-Yo and the Williams, but J.E.J. was a little rusty. That being said, watching scenes from Star Wars with the original soundtrack *live* was quite the nerdgasm.

$5 for lawn?
I don't see that. I'm seeing much higher prices. Am I missing something?

Sorry, $5 was a few years back, I didn't actually look up the price. I'm sure it's outrageously priced now, along with all other concert tickets.

FYI, the "Magical Movie Music" night is August 7th according to the SPAC calendar, not the 8th

Editors: Thanks. It's fixed.

Let's stop romanticizing farming - it's not fun, it's not all bucolic pastures and adorable baby animals, and it's not a great way to make a living. It's dirty, filthy, back-breaking 24/7/365 work that is done for the LOVE of animals, family, and the land. Let's start to RESPECT farmers and do what we can to see that they are actually able to earn a living.
