My Exit: Michael Medvesky

Gilberto Gil.jpgEvery Monday night our friends at WEXT do this thing called My Exit -- local listeners get to come into the station and program an hour of music. So we thought it'd be fun to find out a little bit about these people and why they picked the songs on their play list.

Here's tonight's person:

Who?
I'm Michael Medvesky. I work for the State Comptroller and I'm 27.

How would you describe your musical taste?
I'm a huge music fan and listen to pretty much every genre from classical to electronic.

Four songs from Michael's My Exit:

A Clean Break (Let's Work) by The Talking Heads
The Talking Heads are definitely one of my favorite bands and this was a pretty easy pick for the opening track. It's never been released on an official album but it is the second track on the excellent live album "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads." David Byrne is pretty much a genius and they were an incredible live band. The energy of this song is amazing and makes me pine for a reunion.

Marginalia II by Gilberto Gil
I got a chance to travel to Brazil on tour with my college orchestra back in 2003. In between imbibing copious amounts of the brazilian sugar cane drink Caipirinha, I managed to get exposed to Brazilian Tropicalia music by artists like Gilberto Gil, Caetono Veloso, and Os Mutantes. They've become some of my favorite artists and the music is like nothing I'd ever heard. This track is from Gilberto Gil's 1968 self-titled album which is solid all the way through.

Radiohead is easily my favorite band. I've been lucky enough to see them live 10 times and I've never been disappointed. This is a live version of a b-side that was released on the Com Lag EP. It's just Thom Yorke and a piano, and that's just fine with me.

Silence Kit by Pavement - Pavement's brand of lo-fi indie rock pretty much defines (and transcends) the 1990's. Crooked Rain Crooked Rain is their seminal album and is easily my favorite of theirs. Silence Kit is the album opener and definitely gets things started right. I was thrilled that they are reuniniting this year and have tickets in hand for one of their four concerts at Central Park Summerstage this September.

You can hear Michael's My Exit show tonight at 8 at 97.7 or at exit977.org.

[C]ommon sense tells me (yes, I know one is on dangerous ground when invoking common sense) there's room for consensus here. Or at least compromise. Although something tells me the city won't back off its regulation against live chickens performing in those stand-up comedy showcases. I guess the city has this thing about chickens.
